What is Hypnobirthing?

Why you should consider it

In a nutshell, hypnobirthing is a process that can assist you to enhance your childbirth experience. To quote Hypnobirthing Australia’s founder, Melissa Spilsted – hypnobirthing is just a fancy word for – positive birth

Imagine running a marathon without careful preparation and training. You wouldn’t dream of doing it. Childbirth is a little like running a marathon, you don’t really train for it but you can prepare your mind and body for a confident and blissful birth. The kind of birth you may have heard about from a friend or family member, who told you how empowering and wondrous their child’s birth was. Maybe you’ve read about hypnobirthing in magazines like Cosmopolitan or heard that Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, reportedly had hypnobirths with George and Charlotte. Maybe you have heard a few scary stories and just want a birth that isn’t like that. Or does an innate part of you say women have been doing this for centuries and it shouldn’t be that complicated.

Hypnobirthing labour is not a new concept it has been around for centuries. In fact in the UK midwives are predicting hypnobirthing to be the standard antenatal education, in a decade. The Guardian reported, that pregnant women in Britain are ‘flocking to classes on self-hypnosis births’. Now the word has spread that hypnobirthing is hugely beneficial, Australians are now following suit by attending hypnobirth courses nationwide.

Hypnobirthing combines an independent evidenced based education, of the physiology of birth with natural birthing techniques and tools. These include breathing, deep relaxation, visualisation, affirmation and self-hypnosis. When using hypnobirthing, you’ll place yourself into a state of deep calm with self-hypnosis. The techniques learnt will assist you to reframe and release negative feelings around your birth, creating a positive effect on your body. It will help you to utilise your body’s natural hormone releases during labour and birth and this can reduce the duration of your labour. It will also give you the confidence, to trust with conviction in your body to instinctively birth your baby. All these factors will equip you to optimise your chances for the best possible birth.

A positive birth means a birth in which a woman feels she has freedom of choice, access to accurate information, and that she is in control, powerful and respected. A birth that she approaches, perhaps with some trepidation, but without fear or dread, and that she then goes on to enjoy, and later remembers with warmth and pride.

A positive birth does not have to be ‘natural’ or ‘drug-free’ – it simply has to be informed from a place of positivity as opposed to fear. You can birth with positivity in hospital or at home, with or without medical intervention. You can have a positive caesarean, or a positive home water birth. Positive Birth is about approaching birth realistically, having genuine choice, and feeling empowered by your experience.
